I’m a great fan of the Shining Force-Series. SF, SF2 SF-CD, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Wisdom and also the mega-rare SF3 (PAL and episodes 1+2+3 in Japanese) do I call my own.

Until recently I had only heard of Phantasy star, but never played it. For some weeks now the game has been in my MegaDrive/Genesis and it will probably remain there for a while

The game starts without an introduction, but the story of the game can be told quickly: On Mota, the 2nd planet of the Algo-Star-System’s, the MotherBrain controls everything, like weather control. It was installed by a long forgotten high-standing civilization. But after a while the old machine malfunctions. Weather chaos and biological monsters from the biolab now reign the planet. As an agent your job is to rectify this situation.

The graphics are simple, but detailed when needed. The monsters are drawn big and sufficiently animated. Nothing spectacular, but it supports the story. Japanese Anime-style is avoided.

The sounds and music are the real strength of the game. The melodies are excellent and will fascinate you in years to come.

The game makes you play on the console all day long. It is never too easy and never too hard, but it is through cunning strategy that you beat the game. The tasks are varied and scattered over the entire game. The characters can obtain special abilities (similar to magic in regular RPG’s) and the list of weapons and equipment is long, and allows you too change gear often during the game.

A great game. Not so boring as Shining In The Darkness in which the ever reappearing monsters gets on your nerves) and just as brilliant as Shining Force 1,2 and 3. Absolutely recommendable.
