And just like that, the Final Fantasy Shrine board is no more.
I've been working on our forum and our message boards during my lunch break at work, and I've redone the look of the original message board. I've also gotten rid of both of its siblings, the FFShrine Board and the DWShrine Board. If you have questions pertaining to Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior you can feel free to ask in the RPG Realm Board, and we also would like you to try out the Forum! |

Also!
Okay so I spent all night working on the forum. I've pruned dead accounts, and thusly we went from 167 registered members down to only 34 (!!). I'd like to encourage people to join the Forum... but it seems more often than not once people get authorized they just lose interest. Ah well... The good news is, I'm not alone in my quest to fix the chaos that is the Forum. Long-time member Dknight (who actually as I recall, joined the forum before I did) is now an official Moderator! So anyway yeah; sorry to spam everyone, but the Forum has long been one of the biggest parts of this site, and now that I'm really back into the swing of things, I'd like to get it working again. Thanks for everyone's patience! |

It's that time again.
I'm archiving topics in the Forum.. only this time, I'm also cleaning out superfluous topics ENTIRELY from the archives — topics concerning things no one's given a damn about in over a year and a half, etc. They're just too big, as is the Forum in general, for one (namely me) or two people to manage. As NOT ONE of the other staffers has seen fit to clean up the Forum during my absence from activity for the better part of a year, not only am I coming back to a huge mess, I'm going to damn well turn it around. Myself, because I seem to be the only one willing. *sigh* So, two things. Firstly, I am now and henceforth in charge of the Forum, with Theogal's blessing. Secondly, I'd really like to appoint moderators to help me keep things in check, so that if I ever do have to leave the forum again for a while, I don't return to find not only cobwebs but a 10' tall spider with acid dripping from its mouth, waiting to devour me. I've got a few people in mind for mods. If you'd like to talk to me about it, PM me and I'll listen. Thank you. |

I've made an executive decision; four of them, actually. We're closing down the message boards.
The Dragon Warrior shrine board had its last post on April 20th, 2004. It was our lowest traffic board ever, and I've unceremoniously deleted it from the Boardhost server. The Final Fantasy shrine board was more popular, but it is likewise unused. It will be deleted in 7 days. The original RPG Realm message board may be closed. If you are a regular to the message board or would like to be, please reply to my post "Possible Board Closure" with a "yes". You may also email me. If you would prefer to continue using the Boardhost board format, please migrate to the original RPG Realm message board and leave a positive comment! That's three of the four executive decisions. The fourth is that I learned how to generate an XML feed. See the button up there? It's nothing impressive, but I don't imagine many RPG sites of our size have one. When I redo the news generators I'll incorporate the RSS feed and it'll be all automatic. |

For those of you who use browsers that are rather strict with standards compliance (AOL is the worst, with IE in close second, but I'm referring to Opera, Firefox/Mozilla, and the like), I fixed the "feature" in our email page. Silly me, when I copied print-to-webpage code from a subroutine I copied a line that identified the printed text as text/plain instead of text/html. The problem's been fixed, and now the internet 1337 among you can email the staff without having to click on an extra link or two. |

07/17/04 15:58 |
Alex here again. I'm starting to update all of the pages on the site, and because of a technicality with our server, we're going to be changing the extensions of all of our HTML files from .html to .shtml . Nothing huge but I figure I should get the word out about it just to warn everyone.
Also, I've updated the email program so that it will generate the email address when you click on a link. The "choose who to email" page is still there, though! But the new version will be a little less confusing. I've just finished redoing our staff page, and there are a few things you may want to read up on. I've also included the second-newest emailing page as a feature on it. |
![]() |
07/12/04 19:41 |
The problem was caused by some outdated security scripts inherent in the original FormMail that I based the email script from. (I could write one myself with less hassle, but there's no way I could write one as secure). Since it wasn't used for security purposes anymore I disabled the feature.
The problem didn't seem to affect people at home or on home networks, but maybe this will let people email us from larger business networks. Like me. ^^ |

07/12/04 12:45 |
Just to let everyone know, I'm at work and I just discovered a bug in the code for the email script that is preventing me, at least, from sending email. (at least to myself). I'll have it fixed tonight. |
![]() |
07/10/04 22:54 |
Two items of business. First, I have to apologize for our recent server downtime. There is apparently a bug of sorts in our Perl compiler -- whenever I have tried to debug Perl scripts (with -d added to the end of the compiler location, for those of you who understand this sort of thing), the perl compiler crashes and generates an infinite loop of errors, which fills up our error log and crashes the server.
The second item of business is the script I had been trying to debug. If you click on our signature images to the left of each post, instead of having an email link, you get a popup window with which you can email us. While I realize that this is more inconvenient than simply having a "mailto" link, several staff members have been unable to check their email because spammers run spiders over our site and collect their email addresses. Dialup connections can't always handle that. This clickable version is the first, and most useable one that I will be working on. Hopefully after having worked through these problems, the others will be easier. And as a final note, don't forget the Pokemon guide contest! |
![]() |
07/05/04 14:09 |
well, things are going slowly here right now.
The news for today is that I'm going to postpone the conclusion of the Pokemon guide contest until the end of July, as opposed to June. The two big reasons for this are that we have fewer entries than normal, and I don't actually have the guides in hand to mail yet. |

I'm in the process of changing how a major part of the RPG Realm works -- the email. Because of this, or because of bandwidth limits on the part of the people who use the addresses in question, the following email accounts have gone inactive and have been deleted:
admin@rpgrealm.com dalamar@rpgrealm.com darkelf@rpgrealm.com greg@rpgrealm.com shinlord@rpgrealm.com shin_lord@rpgrealm.com Seeing as I have no bandwidth problems, I can still check my email despite the 200+ spam emails and 50+ megs of bandwidth that I use or receive through my inbox daily. If for any reason you need to get in contact with Greg, Dalamar, or Shin Lord, you can email me and I will forward the email to the private address of the staff member in question. There is a workaround that I am currently busy with and I plan on having it operational by Friday. |

Hello everyone, I wanted to officially say my goodbyes. As of today, I have completely transferred all ownership of the rpg realm to Alex/Theogal. I have enjoyed my roughly 8 years running the site by myself to having a very talented staff but my time has come to move on to different venues. I will be checking in from time to time but for the most part I am bidding everyone farewell.

Hold on to your socks; big, big changes are in store.
Greg (As in, Greg Davis), the man who created, owned, and operated various and sundry incarnations of the RPG Realm since 1997, is stepping down as owner and operator of the site. Greg's life has been moving on, and he no longer has the time or energy to devote to the RPG Realm. As a result, I (Alex/Theogal) will be taking over as owner of the site, in addition to managing all day-to-day operations. If you have any questions or comments, please email me. Greg will retain his current email address for a few days more at minimum, and we expect to keep in touch with him -- and who knows, if he has the time in the future perhaps you'll see an update or two by him! So if you would like to get in contact with Greg, you will still be able to. Everyone at the RPG Realm would like to wish Greg the best of luck in all future endeavors, as well as happiness with his family, both old and new. He is a good man, a good friend, a good boss, and a damned fine gamer too. His presence will be sorely missed. Aside from this sad and depressing news, the .hack//quarantine contest is now officially over, after a bit of an extension. Next month will feature a Pokemon guide for the masses! |

Greg's gotten addicted again... T_T
I don't know how many of you have ever heard of The Realm (the online game, not the web site!). It was originally created by Sierra (I remember getting flyers for it in my parents' copies of King's Quest games) and another company's taken over since then. Anyway, like I mentioned above, Greg used to play years ago, and he's just started again, so he would like a link to it. Until I find a better place for this....
In other news, I have FFXI to review, but my playstation 2 is having the DRE and the last Sony tech support guy I talked to either misspelled "realm" or the letters "r-p-g". So it's going to be a while before I can review it. |

Here's another update for you...
Several months ago, we were offered the chance to interview someone on the staff of FFXI. We took Sony and Square up on the offer, and I've just gotten the questions back this morning. You can go here to read it. As a side note, check out Arch's editorial, "On Bandwidth, Shooters and the Den of Evil", which he inexplicably forgot to post an update about. |

Thanks, Greg P.S. This is my first Review in many ages, so go light on the old geezer. I will also be posting a review to a very nice ARPG for the PC called Blade and Sword by Whiptail Interactive, and I must say it is very nice. I will have it up within 48hrs. |

In keeping with the work that I have been and will continue doing on the fan sub-site (I know, I know, it's not done yet...), I've updated the RPG Realm Privacy Statement to be more consistent with our actual practices. The original text was written before we had ever hosted a contest, and was revised at the time that the contests started, since we collect personal information from you when you enter a contest. The new fan site will require you to become a member in order to submit work, and while it will not be much, that makes the collection of personal info much more... normal; hence the Privacy Policy has been revised a second time to reflect this collection of information.
Yeah, it's dry reading, and no, I don't think anyone has a reason to worry about it. But it's there, and it should be read. I should have something more to show everyone at the end of today (although a working fan site is still beyond me) |

Interplay, who everyone knows as the publisher of great games such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. We are working with them to bring you new previews and reviews of their newest games. BradyGames, the creator of some of the greatest official strategy guides for the top console publishers like square-enix's newest FFX-2 and FFXI. Not a whole lot of news to report.
A preview of Tricrokra's The Fairy Tale is up, in the PC section. :) (finally. I guess this just goes to show how lazy I am) As a side note, both Arkwin and I have updated our staff pages. Arkwin reminded me that I needed to change the listed age (I'm actually 20, not 19) Speaking of staff members, I just got done talking to Algnazer. As you'll remember, if you've been here long enough and paying attention, he's submitted a review and offered to help with both reviews and the pen and paper section. Secondly, the winners of the Soul Calibur 2 contest have been chosen! I've emailed them for confirmation, so when all the winners are confirmed we'll post them on the Soul Calibur 2 contest page. Thirdly, we have a new contest! Yes, this month's contest is for the strategy guide to complement the new dot Hack game -- Outbreak. 5 strategy guides, and the contest ends on Halloween, so go register! Aaaaaaand, she's back. I know, I know, I shouldn't spam the Realm news page with this, but I felt the need. As Theogal said before, I got hit by a truck about a month ago. I'm "fine," as it were; nothing seriously broken, just fracturing of my spine that makes the one thing I do (sit a lot) very, very hard. Aren't I lucky? *sighs* I haven't been doing much that relates to the site other than helping Theogal decide what the upcoming new layout changes will look like. I have, on the other hand, been doing what I can while somewhat bed-ridden; drawing. And thusly, do I present you with a portrait of two of your admins, hard at work. Hello all... many apologies for my long absence.
Tiger Queen was hit by a truck on Friday, August 29th (a week and a half ago), and the driver took off -- and as it turns out, she had her back broken. While she's not in Quite so much pain as she was initially, it's quite a challenge for her to get around, or to sit for long periods. This has also made my life a lot more hectic, as TQ's hard to keep up with. :) Anyways, Greg has long since drawn the winners for the Arc the Lad contest (which is closed) and he has been trying to contact them. We should have an announcement in a day or so of the winners on the Contest page (the forum has already seen 4 of the 5). Speaking of contests, Bradygames this month is giving us 5 Soul Calibur guides to raffle off! I've just added the contest, so you should be able to go and enter. I'm going to try to be around a lot more from now on. I'm sure you'll see more updates soon. |

Yes, I've been working, and no, you don't quite get to see what I've been working on just yet. I've been teaching myself some CGI, and while I'm no expert, you may or may not be seeing more of it. Most likely, the people who simply visit won't know the difference, but if my current project is successful, any one of the staff members will be able to update. Aside from that, the Actual update -- we are now affiliated with Bradygames! *rejoice* What this means for you is that when you click on the Contests button, you'll see a whole lot more. This month the guide we're featuring is Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, and we've bundled them. So if you win the game, you win the guide. Useful, eh? Well, the servers are up... but that's about all we can say for them. I messed something up while moving files over, which caused some delay... and we've now discovered that any Realm-hosted CGI that tries to email an RPG Realm email account will automatically fail. It's the thing I've been devoting all my time to, and thus far it seems to be AIT's fault. SSI's (server-side includes) that call CGI programs also do not seem to work, and I cannot figure out why for the life of me. That won't mean anything to most of you, but if you go to Tiger Queen's site the counter isn't there. That's because SSI's are the things that make counters work. DESPITE ALL THIS... I've finally finished the Arc the Lad review. It's a very good game, but I kept going, "I'll write the review at (insert non-spoiler point here)!" and it turned out that it didn't happen until the very end. I wasn't disappointed, and you should go read the revew here. |

If you can read this, then we've finished moving to the new servers. Rejoice! For things are fixed. The message date is a little vague, though. Greg put in his DNS request Wednesday (CST), and it supposedly takes up to 72 hours to process such things. So... who knows? |

Right now the Realm is in the process of migrating to a new host. We used to be hosted by
Prohost -- but Greg is going to be switching us to AIT servers as soon as possible.
Because of the movement of files, I have temporarily shut down the Forum. If someone posted -- and hence altered a file -- in the middle of the transfer, it would either not show up on the new servers, manage to make it to the new servers unscathed, or mess up Ikonboard completely. I haven't gone through the Ikonboard code myself, so I don't know which one of the three would happen. I'd just rather not take the chance. We'll post updates here as they happen. Problems with the new host shouldn't translate into problems with the current host, so don't worry. |

Added some new wallpapers ^_^ One from Shin for Dark Cloud 2, and two from me for Arc The Lad. Not much else to report... just a lot of running around in the background. Pay no attention to the people behind the curtain... HEY! HEY! I said pay NO attention! ¬ ¬ |

This is a short update - only dedicated to thank my other staff members for allowing me back here at the Realm! I enjoy this site, I've done that since '99, and I'll continue doing that for a long time. Expect some reviews from my hand soon. |

Why are all of my updates at 2:00 in the morning?
Um... 'sides that... Shin emailed me an updated list of release dates, and I've updated the page. As per the usual, there's always much work being done in the background -- but it's worth noting that we have a new staff member! Shirow Wolf, known to those who enter the forum at any point during the month, has agreed to help us out with gaming news. Greg's been working on at least 3 separate projects of great import, but I'll let him update you with those when the time comes. I myself don't know how much I'll be updating in the near future. I've got several programming projects that I've set myself up for. Did you know that we are 100% human powered? We do everything ourselves except for the counters! (not that we have any up ATM besides the regular host's monitors...) I soon hope to remedy that. |

Another update by me. Theogal and I decided to remove some old reviews, which doesn't comply with our new standards of reviewing. Therefore some old reviews have been removed, and will not be re-added to the site. If you think you can help us with a review, please submit one. Click on reviews and then the link for submitting reviews :) |

07/25/03 Time of update..well, I have no clue what the time is in the USA! |
Finally my update has been done, and more things will come soon. I've added two of my own reviews, one for Neverwinter Nights and one for Grandia II. I've removed an old review for Icewind Dale as well. I'm honestly embarrased by my extreme, lazy activity, but hopefully that will change soon. Cheers! |

IF YOU HAVE ENTERED THE CONTEST, READ THIS! There was an error in the contest submission code, and while it has been fixed, we did not recieve any of the entries prior to this notice. IF YOU DID NOT RECIEVE A "THANK YOU FOR FILLING OUT THIS FORM" PAGE, PLEASE RESUBMIT! If you're not sure, resubmit, too. We don't disqualify you for multiple submissions, we just delete all of the extra ones. |

Been a while since I updated... I finished a new article and posted it under Features, and Theogal finished putting up the release dates provided by Shin Lord. Work on the new layout changes hasn't been proceeding much (sorry) but I'm still chewing on ideas for it. More later. |

Nick Sharko has written an editorial about online gaming, and Dave Steffan has written
on character death in the first of what could best be called an occasional series. Check
those out in the Articles and Editorials section!
In other news, Greg has gotten 5 copies of Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits to giveaway, and I've finished the code for the contest page. The contest should be up shortly -- tonight or tomorrow. Aside from putting those up, I've done something that absolutely no-one will notice (except for load time) -- I recoded the javascript rollovers. |

Yes, the other updates never got made. Yes, it's because, well... I'm lazy, and I'm busy. They don't walk hand-in-hand very well. >_<
Profuse apologies to Nick, who's been waiting for his review to go up for nearly a week. Anyway, after deftly finding some Suikoden 3 screenshots (deftly as in half an hour over two days), I've finished the conversion from text to HTML and we have a Suikoden 3 review up here. |

Yoda has requested that we take the link to his conversation with Shin Lord off of the main page, supposedly in deference to RPG Radar, whose site is mentioned once in the text. As Greg said that we would in fact do this, the link has been taken down. You can find a link to the same file in the forum, in the "messages from the administrators" section, the first page of the "notable announcement" subject.
It is worth noting that RPG Radar has been very professional about this, and no disrespect was intended or evident in the conversation. As a sign of support, I would appreciate it if you would go give them a look-see ( www.rpgradar.com ). I'm going to work on some updates, so I'll continue adding on to this post as I don't wish to make two posts tonight. |

I apologize to everyone whom my benevolence has caused harm, pain or annoyance. I apologize to Yoda, for not mentioning more than three times that you needed to lose the ego. And I apologize to Shin Lord and $hinobi, whose updates have been languishing as I've been taking care of other, perhaps more important business. Doesn't mean I don't feel bad about it though.
Yoda is no more. After a disagreement with the rest of the staff that was protracted over the
span of a little more than a day, he has resigned and his content has been removed. Hopefully
we will all learn something from this. Greg has also updated the Forum. Hopefully we will learn something from That, as well. Although this may be in the form of "backups are goooooooooooood." It's up and working. The forum skin that I've worked long and hard on isn't compatible anymore, though. I'll redo the code for it and get TQ to redo the buttons, hopefully they'll look better than mine. Some graphics I can do, but nifty 3d effects for 40-50 little buttons are beyond me. |

I figured with all these Forum problems there was really only one thing that I could do.. an Editorial. I call it, "The Giant And The Little One". It's something all you 3rd Party and Independent Developer watchers should check out.
Aside from that I should have a Review on Activisions' Guardian Crusader within the coming days - thus far it seems as if it's a sleeper title and didn't quite get the credit it deserved. |

Well, well. After Greg deleted the old Ikonboard stuff he discovered that there's a
slight problem -- the version of Ikonboard we were using exports files in a format that
the current version cannot read. There is a patch for it, which Greg did not discover
until after deleting the Ikonboard.
I generally back up the entire Realm every few months. I'm not sure which month I last backed up the Ikonboard but it was certainly functional then. The current plan is for me to reupload the old Ikonboard and then import our old files. We won't lose anything. Then Greg will apply the patch and re-export our data, and with those files in tow he will re-install the new Ikonboard. This should work, but I know CGI only as far as my knowledge of C++ can throw me, and I'm having trouble not only getting the old Ikonboard files to work at all, but Smart FTP only seems to upload the top directory (it doesn't recurse to subdirectories) and WS_FTP just won't keep a stable connection to the god-forsaken Prohost servers. I've uploaded all I can -- now it's time for bed. |

As we speak, Greg is attempting to upgrade the Forum.
We've backed everything up, don't worry. But he's run into problems with CGI file
restrictions. I just sent off an email to the mailing list, so I'm really sorry for all the trouble. Depending on how long the forum is down, we might send out another email to the list when Greg's gotten it back up. |

After several hours of feverish work and debugging (probably would have been 10 minutes if I were better at PERL and CGI than I actually am) I have managed to get the search working, and looking uniform. You can search for stuff now! The only problem is that we still have many many old pages... I'll go clean some of those out, now. |

I added an archive page link at the bottom of this one for old news, and moved anything older than one month to it, since the news page here was getiing pretty ridiculously long. I'll try and keep up with moving stuff over, so this page doesn't get bogged down. I'm also trying to work out the changes to the layout in my head... it won't be absolutely major, just a shifting of buttons and some content. Don't expect any site downtime, this is just going to take some planning and time that I haven't actually had too much of to work out... |

*Interview can be found in Features section*
I am VERY pleased to announce that I have had the honour to interview Evillusion on their title Eon of Tears. I want to thank Evillusion for giving me the greatest opportunity of my interviewing career thus far. Thank You. I'd suggest you look out Square-Enix, there's a new developer in town. |
